The Scarifiers Golf Club was founded in April 1976 by 16 Murrayfield members who gathered in the Scarisbrick Hotel,Southport for 3 days golf. The name 'Scarifiers' owes it's origin not so much to the method of treating golf courses but rather to the action of the Scarisbrick Hotel breakfasts on the members' stomachs.
The aim of the Club was to organise golf tours in the UK and beyond and to play matches against clubs of similar standing. In the early years the Club toured to Sweden, USA, Portugal, Denmark England, Ireland, France and Spain but in recent years the tours have been in Scotland. Membership of the Club is restricted to Murrayfield members and friends of Scarifiers, numbers ranging from the original 16 to the current 59.
The Club has a Club Champion's Cup, Handicap Champions Cup Summer Singles and Foursomes Trophies, Tour Champion's Trophy and a 3 Club and Putter Trophy.
The Club has played in the Dispatch Trophy and has participated in the Champion of Champions, Handicap and Sivewright Trophies since the early 80s
In 1996 a match was arranged between the Scarifiers ( Seniors over 60) and a team from the German Senior Golfing Society over 3 days in Rhyder Cup format over North Berwick West Course, the Scarifiers emerging winners by 15 1/2 to 12 1/2. One newspaper described the match as an official international event which of course it wasn't.
