The Lothians Golf Association has recognised that since the introduction of its very successful coaching programme, the availability and provision of coaching and other development opportunities for young golfers, through programmes such as Clubgolf, the SGL Development Centres and Academies together with the increase in capacity afforded through club pro's, driving ranges and private contractors has changed the landscape of golf development.

Recognising this, in 2014 the Lothians reviewed the position it occupies as an Area and where our coaching programme now fits within this landscape. The conclusion was that the Lothians Golf Association should continue to provide a winter coaching programme for boys within our area but with a slightly different emphasis.
The programme runs between November and March and is aimed mainly at boys aged between 12 - 15 years. The number of boys on the programme can vary but in the 2024/25 season we will have 12 boys participating. In a year when players had the opportunity again to apply directly for the coaching programme it was disappointing that the response was well below expectation as was the response from junior convenors.
The Boys Coaching Committee select the boys for the programme and take into account their performance during the previous season, performance in team matches, recommendations from clubs and attitude to the previous coaching programme.
The programme consists of five full day coaching sessions and two matches, with different formats and challenges. We also appreciate the requirement for fitness and the boys will attend fitness sessions and learn about nutrition and wellbeing as well as getting some sports psychology.
We are once again delighted to have Olly Morton continuing as a coach this year which provides good continuity in our programme which benefits the Boys as they progress in the game. He is joined by a former Lothians Men's Champion, Zander Culverwell who, as a professional, is now based at The Rennaisance. The fitness aspects will be covered by Chris Simpson and the sports psychology by Zander Culverwell.
