Our Golf Club was founded in 1890 by the staff of Scottish Equitable – an Edinburgh-based mutual insurance company which had been in existence since 1831.
Scottish Equitable joined the Aegon group in the 1990s and the company and golf club rebranded to be called the Aegon Golf Club in the early 2000’s.
So in the Lothian’s centenary year (2021) we will have been going for 131 years!
Our normal membership numbers fluctuate around 60 – 70 and is made up of current and ex-Aegon employees along with a number of retired members.
We normally manage to organise around 8 or 9 outings/events each year (a mixture of day, half-day and evening events) as well as run our summer singles and winter pairs matchplay competitions.
We have a number of prestigious trophies that we compete for each year, some dating back to the founding of the club. The pick of the bunch is probably the Sprague Cup, named after Thomas Bond Sprague a prominent actuary of the day (the only person to be President of both the Institute (England) and the Faculty (Scotland) of Actuaries) and a chief exec of Scottish Equitable. The cup is presented to the winner of our summer singles matchplay competition and has been played for almost every year since 1890.
Each year we normally enter the Lothians knock-out competitions and our greatest successes here were when Scottish Equitable GC won the Sivewright Quaich in 1998 and Bill Park won the Handicap Matchplay in 1992.
