Three Lothians Players in the Top 20 of the Scottish Seniors at Luffness New.

Luffness New was the toast of the players and of the Scottish Golf officials all of whom were full of praise for a course in great condition and for the welcome they got.

On a benign day on Wednesday the scoring was good with Tantallon’s Stephen Govenlock and Duddingston’s Michael Armstrong leading the Lothians contingency with one under par 69’s. The wind however made it a much sterner test from there on with the cut for the 60 players reaching the last day at 11 over par. Of the 7 Lothians players surviving, not surprisingly, 4 were Luffness New members (Archibald, Armstrong, Cuthbert and Reid) although two have home clubs elsewhere. The other 3 (Clelland, Dickson and Govenlock) were all links club players which tells a tail.

Top Lothians spot went to Michael Armstrong (Duddingston, Luffness New and the secretary of RICS) who took 8th place only 3 shots behind the winner. More impressive was him holding his own on the last day in the company of the British Seniors Amateur Champion, Trevor Foster, and the eventual winner, Graham Bell (Downfield). Local man, Colin Cuthbert, was only 1 shot further back and the same margin separated him from club-mate John Archibald. Sandy Reid, Bruntsfield Links GS, but also Luffness New, was just outside the top 20.

A good showing by these gentlemen, and food for thought for the Lothians selectors, for the end of season Scottish Seniors Team Championship squad.
